Purdue coach Painter named to USA U19 staff

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — Purdue coach Matt Painter will be one of two assistant coaches for the USA Basketball U19 World Championships team.

Painter will join Jamie Dixon of Pittsburgh, the team's head coach, and Chris Lowery of Southern Illinois on the U.S. staff for the 16-team tournament July 2-12 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Americans' preliminary round opens July 2 against Iran.

Trials to select the team will be held June 16-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Painter has led Purdue to three consecutive NCAA tournament berths, including a trip to the regional semifinals this season. The Boilermakers also won the Big Ten tournament.
