Mildred Raynolds Trivers, 95
MUNCIE - Mildred Raynolds Trivers, 95, passed away on November 19, 2007 in Muncie, Ind. She was born on America's birthday - July 4, 1912 - in Columbus, Ohio, the eldest child of Edwin and Mildred Raynolds. She moved to Akron, Ohio, where she graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High School. Mildred continued her education, graduating from Hollins College and attending graduate school at Radcliffe College, where she met and later married Howard Trivers in 1934.
After the wedding, Mildred and Howard lived and traveled in Greece, Germany and Switzerland. With one child in tow and war approaching, they returned home in 1939. Soon afterwards, Howard joined the Foreign Service, which led the family to live in Copenhagen, Berlin and Zurich. In addition to her duties as a diplomat's wife, Mildred raised a family of four boys and three girls.
The family moved to Muncie in 1972, where Mildred became active in the First Presbyterian Church and various poetry groups. She founded the 401 Poetry Group and the popular Humpback Barn Festival. Her numerous publications include: Circled Round with Awe, Flowers for Frill, Two Plus Seven, Winter Moon, For My Remembering and If You Want a Modern Mother. Her weekly broadcast as the Poet of Twin Ponds Lane was heard on WBST-FM. Her accomplishments were acknowledged by the community and the State of Indiana with the award of the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1999 and a special citation of merit by Lifestream Services in 2002.
Mildred is survived by six of her seven children, Aylmer (Midge) of Beckett, Mass., Robert of East Brunswick, N.J., Jon (Karen) of Paradise, Calif., Ruth Ann Mekitarian of Lawrenceville, N.J., Mildred Palmer (David) of Royal Oak, Mich., and Howard (Cathy) of Indianapolis, Ind., She is also survived by her son-in-law, Souham Harati of Beirut, Lebanon; her sister, Jane Waldo of Yarmouth Port, Mass.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; her daughter, Kate; her son-in-law, Arshavir Mekitarian; her brother, Ned; and her sister, Ruth.
Mildred will be buried on Friday, November 30, 2007, at the Armstrong Chapel Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Muncie with Reverend Ron Naylor officiating at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2007.
